Patan & Modhera — stepwells, sun temple, silk
Two tiny towns, 45 minutes apart, that contain some of India's most mind-blowing architecture. Pair with Adalaj near Ahmedabad for a north-Gujarat trifecta.

Why Patan and Modhera together
Rani ki Vav (the Queen's Stepwell) in Patan is widely considered the finest stepwell in India — a giant inverted temple 24 m deep, with 500+ principal sculptures, descending seven stories of carved sandstone. UNESCO World Heritage.
The Sun Temple at Modhera, 50 km further north-east, was built in 1026 AD by the Solanki dynasty king Bhimdev I. The Surya mandapa aligns so the sun's first rays on the equinox fall on the main image — even today, the geometry still works.
Patan itself is also the home of Patola, the famous double-ikat silk saree whose threads are dyed and re-dyed across months, then warp & weft tied before weaving so the geometric patterns emerge from the cloth as a single piece of art. Weavers invite you into their workshops — it's one of the most rewarding textile tours in India.
A perfect one-day itinerary
Rani ki Vav at sunrise
Cool light, soft shadows and almost no tourists. Walk the seven levels top-to-bottom. Photography is allowed; ask first for the inner sanctum shots.
Patola silk weaving workshop
The Salvi family has been weaving here for centuries. Tours with the loom-demonstration are free; buying a saree takes more effort and cost.
Sun Temple, Modhera
50 km drive. Allow 90 minutes. Best light is late afternoon. Combine with the small on-site Surya-kund tank if time permits.
Build it into a loop
Patan + Modhera + Adalaj = Gujarat's best one-day heritage circuit.
